Employment at Kanawana

Thank you for your interest in YMCA Kanawana, the first residential summer camp in Québec. This summer will mark our 114th summer of spirit, leadership, and fun, and we are looking for individuals who are compassionate, enthusiastic and dedicated to children and the environment.  If you are looking for the life changing experience of positively impacting children from around the world, YMCA Kanawana is the place for you.

YMCA Kanawana offers a traditional approach to summer camping with core programs in canoeing, canoe tripping, nature, and outdoor survival skills – including Wildlife Gaining Ground. We also offer a wide variety of other activities, including rock climbing, archery, arts & crafts, kayaking, theatre arts, snorkeling, dance, “School of Rock” (music), and of course swimming.

YMCA Kanawana is an English language camp, though more than a quarter of our campers speak French at home.

All Staff must be:
  • in possession of a valid First Aid/CPR certificate (a training will be offered in May 2008).
  • subject to a Police check, the cost of which is covered by YMCA Kanawana
  • at least 17 years old
  • passionate about working with children & the environment
Staff should be:
  • Able to speak English and some French (with the exception of international staff)
  • have experience working with children
 SUMMER POSITIONS AT YMCA KANAWANA 

COUNSELING STAFF & SPECIALISTS

Junior counselors:
(17 years) Work closely with counselors to ensure your assigned cabin group is having the time of their life (see counselor description), as well as spend part of the summer helping the maintenance and kitchen teams.

Counselors: (18+) The best and toughest job in camp. Have the opportunity to be responsible for a cabin group of 8 children whom you lead in program activities in the afternoon and evenings. Mornings help teach interest group activities in an area of your expertise/interest. Please see Interest Groups on our Camper Activities page

Lifeguards/Swimming Instructors: (18+) Responsible for supervising the beach and teaching lessons in the mornings.

Waterfront Director: (21+) responsible for supervising the swimming waterfront, swimming lessons and coordinating supporting and supervising the lifeguard team.

Back country Canoe Guides: (21+) Responsible for leading 5-10 day wilderness canoe trips.  Lead guides must have their Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification. Guides of white water trips must also have their Swift Water Rescue Technician (SRT) certification. It is preferable also to have White Water Paddling certification, 4B Driver's License and Bronze Medallion (or Bronze Cross).

Program Specialists: (18+) Specialists are responsible for the program area of their expertise (canoeing, rock climbing, nature, arts & crafts, kayaking). They must teach a four-day program on successive mornings, by following an established lesson plan which helps participants develop skills. In the afternoon and evening, they provide animation for cabin groups visiting their program area, where the focus is more on fun rather than skill building.

Rental Group Program Specialists: (18+) Rental Group Specialists are responsible for animating and coordinating groups which visit the site in the early summer through early fall, including while camp is in session. Positions required are lifeguards, boating, climbing and nature specialists.  When not working with rental groups, they assume the duties of a regular program specialist

RESOURCE TEAM
All resource staff members act as a support to our counseling and specialist staff, are the primary contact with parents, coordinate logistics, and support staff in maintaining YMCA camping values and standards of excellence.

Program Director: (21+) Responsible for supporting program specialists and their program areas, and the coordination of rental groups. Ensures high standards of programming are being run throughout camp at all times. Must be comfortable providing constructive feedback to staff and must write an end of summer report. Previous senior position in a camp milieu.

Assistant Director: (21+) Responsible for preparing for summer camp: logistics, programming and training, as well developing and coordinating new programs. Also responsible for: animation, intervention, staff supervision, administration and presentation of written reports. with previous senior position in a camp milieu

LIT Director(s): (21+) Responsible for overseeing the Leader-In-Training program for 16 year old campers. Must have experience working with adolescents and experience teaching training sessions and workshops. Practical experience working with children, preferably in a camp setting, is required.

Section Directors: (21+) The section director is responsible for supporting and supervising 8-12 counselors and junior counselors and is the primary contact with parents. Section directors also coordinate schedules and lead activities for his or her section.

Business Office manager: (21+): Responsible for customer service, coordination of transportation, the camp store & website updates, distribution of mail, email and camp photos. As well, oversees an assistant business office manager.

Assistant Business Office Manager: (18+) Work in coordination with the business office manager to run all aspects of the office (see above).
  

HEALTH CARE STAFF

Health Care Director: (21+) Must be a Registered Nurse or a Paramedic, who has either Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness First Aid Certification (including CPR). He or she must possess solid diagnostic skills and be able to provide compassionate care for campers and staff. Under the supervision of the camp director, the YMCA Kanawana Health Director must also order and manage all supplies and ensure the efficient operation of the infirmary including communicating with parents, documenting treatments and dispensing medication. 

Health Care Worker: (18+) Must have current CPR certification as well as Wilderness First Aid Certification. He/she must also provide front line care to 300 campers and staff, document treatments and dispense medication. A background in nursing is preferred.


SUPPORT TEAM

Drivers: (21 +) Must have a clean driving record and a 4B license. Primary responsibility is driving campers to canoe trip destinations, airport runs as well as errands as required.

Maintenance Assistant: (17+) Assist the maintenance staff in the upkeep and cleanliness of the camp site.

FOOD SERVICE TEAM

Chef:
(21 +) Coordinate all food orders, work with suppliers and refine production schedules for the team based on our menu – all within a specified budget. The chef must support and supervise the Kitchen team and ensure that a high quality of food is prepared in a clean working environment.

Sous-chef: (21+) Oversee the preparation and food delivery on your shift. Must coordinate the Kitchen team, have a strong work ethic and desire to produce excellent food in a professional atmosphere.

Baker: (21+) Must bake all breads for summer camp and canoe expeditions, as well as prepare desserts and other general food preparations. Previous experience is required, and the successful candidate must be able to work with minimal supervision.

Dish washers: (18+) These crucial team members must work efficiently and professionally to ensure the smooth running of our food service.

Kitchen aids: (17+) General help in the kitchen with food preparation, dining hall supervision, and dishwashing as needed.
