Development Project

“Sharing the gift of nature with those who need it the most”: this has been our guiding vision over the last few years, as we have worked to make Kanawana a model of sustainable development and an outdoor centre open to children of all walks of life.

Thanks to the generous support of many donors, in addition to significant investments by the YMCAs of Québec, our unique and innovative development project is becoming reality: at this time, we are thrilled to report that Phase I is 75% complete!

Phase I had 2 main objectives:
1- developing 3-season facilities to welcome more children and youth, and
2- reducing our ecological footprint and thereby introducing didactic elements that also foster a sense of stewardship.

These 2 goals have been meet through the completion of 2 major construction projects:

Summer 2010: 2 new washroom and shower buildings featuring composting
Winter 2010 : 12 new 3-season camper cabins.

This Spring, many school groups will enjoy the spaciousness and natural light of these new cabins – where every camper has his or her own window to look out onto the woods. This Summer, each cabin will accommodate 10 kids and 2 counsellors.

Both projects were completed thanks to a fundraising campaign led by John E. Cleghorn, Rob Braide, Michael Novak, Gary Maavara et H. Jonathan Birks. To date, we have raised $ 3,125 million and will continue our efforts to complete Phase I by constructing 2 new 3-season learning pavilions.

Beyond these new facilities, the camp is also « walking the (green) talk » in its operations, with an organic garden, kitchen composting, the use of ecological cleaning products and many other improvements!

Finally, also thanks to the generous support of many donors and the YMCA’s Access for all program, the camp is able to offer financial assistance to families in need. More and more, our camp reflects the rich diversity of Montreal and the lower Laurentians.

We thank all those who have invested their time, talent and treasure to make Kanawana a truly unique and special experience.
