A TYPICAL DAY AT YMCA KANAWANA
MORNINGS At 7:15 am the bell rings for wake-up & morning dip – a delight for early-risers. A second bell rings at 7:45 am to announce breakfast (see meals below). After breakfast, campers have time to clean up their tent or cabin and get ready for their Interest Group Activities (see below). Interest Groups are followed by General Swim – a time where campers can either choose to swim or go to designated program areas such as the boating water front or the nature nook.
AFTERNOONS After eating a hearty lunch, campers are given time to digest & rest in their tent/cabin and prepare for their 2 afternoon program periods. Program periods give campers the opportunity to try various program areas or creative activities with their bunkmates. Please see below for possible activities (Interest Group Activities & Other Activities). Throughout a session we frequently have All-Section & All-camp activities bringing everyone together. These activities are then followed by a second General Swim (see above), where other program areas will be open to campers, such as the rock-climbing wall and the Katimavik.
EVENINGS On certain evenings, immediately following dinner, the whole camp gathers to enjoy cabaret – where campers & staff have the chance to sing a song, perform a skit, do a dance, or share any other talent or creative idea they may have. There is one program period each evening for younger campers (7-10 years old) and two program periods for older campers (11-16 years old). Please see below for possible activities (Interest Group Activities & Other Activities).
BEDTIME After their final program period, campers are given time to wash up and get ready for bed. Lights out is at 8:15 for younger campers and around 9:30 for older campers. Staff are assigned to be On-Duty in each section to ensure the supervision and safety of all campers at night. Counselors sleep in the cabin or tents with the campers.
MEALS Meals takes place in our historic dining hall built with wood from our site in 1919. Campers sit together with their cabin mates at meals, providing time for friendships to develop and a good time for counselors to get to know their kids. Following lunch in the dining hall there are cheers every other day.
INTEREST GROUP ACTIVITIES At the start of each week, campers are given the opportunity to select two of their favorite activities in which they will learn & develop new skills for 1 hour (per Interest Group) each morning. (Certain Interest Groups that require more advanced learning are 2 hours long – allowing the selection of only 1 Interest Group for that week). During the four days of instruction, our specialized hands-on instructors help campers to develop or refine their skills, and, in certain circumstances, obtain certified levels. Campers also have the opportunity to enjoy the majority of these program areas in the afternoon and evening with their cabin group or section, where the focus is on fun and building group spirit.
